Vasili's Garden Episodes

What an inspiration!
What an inspiration!

This week we went out to meet Adrian and his family in Wheelers Hill and what a lovely family they are too!
Every week we talk about keeping the traditions alive in gardening and all things about sustainable living and Adrian is doing just that.
Only in his early 20s, Adrian was inspired to get into gardening as recent as 2 years ago but if you were to take a look at his garden you would think that he’s been gardening for years.

Still living at home and sure you might say that dad is secretly doing it all but that’s not that case here.
Dad is too busy reconfiguring all the grey water outlets around the house and harvesting them so that nothing goes to waste and it’s all recycled.
For example: All the shower water is collected in a drum then gravity fed back to be used in the toilet, and as Luigi said himself, with each shower they have, the water collected provides them with at least 5 toilet flushes, so there’s none of this ….’If it’s yellow let it mellow’ at Luigi’s place.

And if Luigi is not working on the grey water harvesting system, he’s relaxing in the cellar of the house having a drink of his wine while thinking about the next contraption his going to implement.

So Adrian has taken over the garden and everything he grows is based around the organic approach which means you can harvest anything and everything from the garden when you like without the fear of chemical pollution. Nothing harmful or dangerous to the environment or their health is ever used to grow in Adrian’s garden, especially when his partner Elspeth works for the department of sustainability in particular the department where they search and destroy illegal weeds that a grown in the state. Hmmm….. That sounds like tate Fox, feather, tail something or other weed?
I can never remember that name.

A well presented sustainable garden that Adrian has worked on for only the last 2 years and already enjoying the benefits from it all, this being the fresh organic produce that comes out of it, which I must say we enjoyed eating that day too.

Only in his mid 20s and gardening like a 60 year old and proud as punch too!
Adrian’s and Elspeth’s definition of going out is during hard rubbish collection week, where they always find something useful to use in their garden, might be rubbish to someone else but treasure to them and a very good thing for the environment too I might add.
The triple ‘R’s, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Don’t forget it and start practicing it yourself too, and just like Adrian and Elspeth you will feel the joy and excitement of finding something valuable to you that’s considered as waste by others, and in doing so, just like Adrian does, take your partner out to celebrate your findings with a Slurpee from the local convenient store.
Maresi!

Featuring This Week

Native Tucker

Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!

But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.

I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
