Vasili's Garden Episodes

Water for Everyone!
Water for Everyone!

Meet Vincenzo, a retired assistant mechanic whose passion now lies within his garden of paradise.
He never knows much about gardening when he first came to Australia, but he didn’t waste time learning everything.
He puts it down to the simple love and pleasure of nature that he has and the beautiful fresh organic produce that he harvests every day for him and his family.

Due to unfortunate health experiences, Vincenzo hasn’t been able to do the same level of work in the garden as he used to, this is where his son Vittorio comes to his rescue.
Just like his dad in the early years, Vittorio had no idea about growing, propagating, harvesting anything, all he know how to do was to eat the great meals his mum prepared with the produce from the garden for him and his brothers.
Now a few years down the track, Vittorio has admitted how regretful he is for not getting involved in gardening earlier in his life, but he is ever so grateful that he has now. For him himself said that one day dad won’t be with us, so who was going to take over the veggie patch and look after the trees?
We took it for granted that everything was there ready for us whenever and whatever we wanted to eat.
“Now I understand the pleasures of gardening, it’s relaxing, sometimes physically challenging but mentally relaxing” He says.
We must all learn the basics of gardening, it’s plain and simple to understand that if we don’t, we will all become 100% reliant on fast food, processed food and anything and everything that is bad for your health.

Doing it yourself in your own garden always brings the family together to celebrate with good healthy and very clean produce and even lifestyle for that matter, and what could possibly be so wrong with that?

We’ve all experienced tough time with water restrictions, but for Vincenzo, that has never affected him what so ever. With 9100litres of water and all the grey water harvested too, Vincenzo has never ever ran out of water to use in his garden. He even admitted that people have tried to report him for supposably using water illegally, but after being investigated he was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his efforts by his local council.
Vincenzo has never used paid water, as he calls it to water his garden.
All the water used in his garden has either been harvested rain water or recycled grey water from the house, and the end result is a fantastically thriving productive garden.
We can all learn a thing or two from Vincenzo, I know I have.

Featuring This Week

Native Tucker

Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!

But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.

I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
