I’ve got worms! Have you?
That’s what the sign said when we turned up at Des’ place out in Dingora West Vic.
As soon as we arrived all I could think about was getting some worm tablets into me, but I was quickly assured by Des that it’s not those types of worms that he has, its compost worms!
This week we went out to meet Des and learn all there is to know about worms, worm farms and the benefits of having worms….. In the garden that is!
30 years ago Des used to have a Piggery, but after changes in the stock market and climatic changes too, it all got too difficult to keep so he decided to get in to worm farming.
20 Years later and he is still worming as strong as ever and to top it off, he’s even invented his own machinery, mechanical system that is, which helps him collect and separate the worms from the compost.
I was totally amazed at the set up and when I asked him how, where, why. His reply was, “when I’m lying in bed I’ve go to do something so I start to analyse and create.” You’ve got to love your worms I say, because I can think of at least 2 things I could be doing in bed other than analysing, and one of them is sleeping!
Did you know that apart from the three odd thousand species of worms that exist around the world, there are two main types of worms that we should consider when trying to establish a healthy garden.
First, there are compost worms which live and work in compost heaps above the ground, and then there are the earth worms that obviously live beneath the surface.
Earth worms can live as far down as 1 meter below surface and when ever they want to feed, they just crawl up to the top 100mm of the earth eat and make compost, then go back down again when finished,
Where as compost worms feed in the top 100mm of compost heaps that are created above ground. What a life!
I have full respect for worms and so should you, after all, they’ve been here thousands of years before us humans have and I can assure you that they‘ll be here for thousands of years after we’re all gone too.
So if you haven’t got worms, then what are you waiting for?
Get worming!
Maresi!
