Vasili's Garden Episodes
Greece Episode 8
Never enough wineries I say, the more the merrier and the drunker we get.
Oh.. don’t get me wrong, we were very responsible when it came to wine tasting, we made sure we never tasted wine before 9am and no more than 3 glasses before 10am.
But when you go to Siatista wines which is known for its sweet cognac style wine, how do you stop a 3 glasses?
Siatista wines has a different procedure to wine making, instead of just crushing the grapes as soon as they are picked, at Siatista they lay them in drying trays to dry the grapes naturally into sultanas before they are pressed, the end result is intense.
After a few glasses we head off to visit a nice Greek family in Siatista where we take the opportunity to view and talk about their garden. As you know Greece is not known for having luscious green gardens and lawns so you can imagine the surprise I had we we arrived to this home that had everything a typical Australian garden would have except for the Eucalyptus trees of course.
Then we head off to visit an historical mansion of Siatista, which I must say that the gardens of its time would have been marvellous but unfortunately were left to ruins.
The mansion itself too is showing major signs of deterioration and unfortunately due to red tape in local law it might be a bit late to repair the much needed structural work before it collapsed. Nevertheless went in for a tour and it was amazing, now remember that they had no electricity in those days, so they had to make other arrangements to preserve their produce, and one of the methods was to bury large urns into the earth that housed their meat. The mansion even had its own dance room with a band stage and catering service too. Can you imagine the parties back then?
To finish the show we visit Theodoro who takes us for a tour through the apple orchard, unlike many growers here in Australia, the apple trees there are grown in an espalier form and it works well for them. The apples taste great too.

Featuring This Week
Native Tucker
Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!
But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.
I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
