Vasili's Garden Episodes

Greece Episode 6
Greece Episode 6

We folks, on this show you will get it all in one, from wine production with another award wining vineyard, to visiting an animal protection site for bears, and then to finish off the show we visit another cheese factory.
After checking with our travel guide, we came to realize that during our travels through Greece, we will be visiting many wine makers and cheese factories. Personally I don’t have a problem with that especially when you know that these organizations are recognized as some of the best in the world.

Our first stop is Alpha wines, but after going to Gerovassiliou winery I thought it couldn’t get any better, well it does, but not so much as Alpha making a better Shiraz are Merlot but that they have a slightly different approach and the end result it just perfect.

We then go to Arktouda, which is a ’Save the Bear’ organization that has been set up to save, protect and nourish back to good health all the bears in and around Greece that were once captive to humans and used for the purpose of money making through performances. I would say that having a dancing bear would only be fine under strict conditions which would prove that the bear is safe well looked after and not punished, tortured and even operated on for the purpose of wealth. But unfortunately these idealistic situations can never exist and that’s why this organisation exists.

The bears are beautiful and I felt like hugging them but I was quickly advised not to as there would not be much left of me if I tried.

To finish the show we go to another cheese factory, now we all know Greece makes some of the best if not the best cheeses in world, so why not more cheese I say.

We tried cheese from the province of Kastoria, Kozania and now we try Florina, and you know what? The cheese was beautiful, I don’t have a favourite but if I had to choose one it would be a close finish between Feta and Kefalograviera which is what we use to make Saganaki which I believe most of you would know.

Featuring This Week

Native Tucker

Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!

But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.

I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
