Vasili's Garden Episodes

Greece Episode 4
Greece Episode 4

If you love sweets you will just love Elenidis pastry shop and if that’s not enough, you can make your way down to Hatzis sweets.

Elenidis is famous for its trigona sweet pastries, the store is situated in Panorama which is a lovely area outside the madness of Thessaloniki and quite high in altitude, from you can see the whole of Thessaloniki, it really looks fantastic. We met the owner Vaggelis who is a very nice and polite person. Here we learnt about the trigona which is a traditional Greek sweet, triangular in shape and made from puff pastry dipped in syrup filled with custard cream and boy didn’t I make myself sick.

Later we went for a drive to see my uncle Theodoro, I only remember him ever working with fur but since the law had banned the sale of fur to many European countries; my uncle turned from fur making to growing tomatoes on a large scale. I’ve been to many tomato growers but I must admit that Theodoro does a great job of growing, although as a typical Greek he does bugger all work, so most of the work is done by Albanians. Nevertheless they grow them well, and he does share with us some great tips for home growers too.

To finish of the show we decided to get more sweets into our system as if there wasn’t enough eaten at Elenidis. We visit Hatzis cakes to learn about the history of some of the most popular desserts in Greece. Hatzis has been around for over 100 years and as we were told, many important figures of Greece used to meet there to discuss the future directions Greece. After being in Greece for only a couple of days, my judgment would serve me right in stating that they may have eaten one too many sweet when they made some of their decisions.

Regardless of that, the sweets are delicious and worth the stomach ache.

Featuring This Week

Native Tucker

Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!

But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.

I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
