Vasili's Garden Episodes

Greece Episode 11
Greece Episode 11

Greece is not only about wine and cheese as some of you might think, it does have some beautiful sights to see too, as you will see when we visit some beautiful waterfalls a very old monastery and church and even a newly built dam, something that we in Australia are in desperate need of.

After many years of deliberating the idea, somehow the Greeks all united and managed to construct a much needed dam for the region of Velvendo and now there is water for everyone.

Later we travel up to a very old Monastery that once was home to many orphan boys but has since been abandoned. Priest Serafim is there with the help of a few Albanian men to try and rebuild the once beautiful place with hope to restore it to its original state. The sacred art work inside the church is just amazing.

With so much history in Velvendo we decided to do a pit stop at their local museum, although it’s nowhere as big and elaborate as the museum in Kozani, yet it still has enough items on display to tell a tale and Maria our guide was so helpful to explain it all to us too.

And just when you think the sites don’t get any better, well they do!

We travel to the waterfalls of Velvendo where we take a hike through the man made path up the mountain and through the valley way which also has a fresh water stream running beside the path, so you’re guaranteed not to get thirsty. We end up in an area that’s been set up as a retreat for picnic goers, there cooking facilities, swings for the kids and even a fresh and very clean water mini dam for those who wish to swim on a hot day.
Apart from the swings and cooking facilities that were built by humans the rest of the entire area is as natural as it was one thousand years ago, and people have been going there for just as long.

Featuring This Week

Native Tucker

Talk to me about tomatoes and cucumbers I’ll say yes please.
Or maybe you want to talk fruit trees. Of course, I love them too!

But if you start talking native bush foods, well this is where it poses itself as a problem to me.
Yes I must admit I haven’t had a lot of experience in eating good old native bush food, but I want to and that’s exactly what I went out to do this week.

I ventured out to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens and met up with the man himself John Arnott who is the chief horticulturalist/expert in native plants just as I like to think I am with my good old traditional Mediterranean vegie garden.
